The Lsnd Puzzle in the Light of Miniboone Results
نویسنده
چکیده
Reconciling the LSND evidence1 for ν̄μ → ν̄e oscillations with the global neutrino data reporting evidence and bounds on oscillations remains a long-standing problem for neutrino phenomenology. Recently the MiniBooNE experiment 2,3 added more information to this question. This experiment searches for νμ → νe appearance with a very similar L/Eν range as LSND. No evidence for flavour transitions is found in the energy range where a signal from LSND oscillations is expected (E > 475 MeV), whereas an event excess is observed below 475 MeV at a significance of 3σ. Two-flavour oscillations cannot account for such an excess and currently the origin of this excess is under investigation 2, see also 4. MiniBooNE results are inconsistent with a two-neutrino oscillation interpretation of LSND at 98% CL3, see also 5. The exclusion contour from MiniBooNE is shown in Fig. 1 (left) in comparison to the LSND allowed region and the previous bound from the KARMEN experiment6, all in the framework of 2-flavour oscillations.

The neutrino puzzle in the light of SNO
SNO's neutral current measurement has added a new piece to the emerging neutrino physics puzzle. Putting together the presently available experimental information, an essentially unique picture emerges: The solar neutrino anomaly is explained by ν e → ν τ oscillations, the atmospheric neu-trino anomaly is explained by ν µ → ν s and the LSND data are explained by ν e → ν µ. This scheme will be t...
متن کاملMiniBooNE Oscillation Results
Motivated by the LSND observation of an excess of observed ν̄e events above Monte Carlo prediction in a ν̄μ beam 1, the MiniBooNE experiment was designed to test the neutrino oscillation interpretation of the LSND signal in both neutrino and anti-neutrino modes. MiniBooNE has approximately the same L/Eν as LSND, where L is the neutrino travel distance and Eν is the neutrino energy. However, the M...

متن کاملShort Baseline Neutrino Oscillations and a New Light Gauge Boson
We consider a model of neutrino oscillations with three additional sterile neutrinos and a gauged B − L interaction. We find allowed values of the model parameters which can reconcile the results of the evidence for ν̄μ → ν̄e conversion seen at the LSND neutrino oscillation experiment with the null results of the MiniBooNE experiment. A portion of the low energy excess of νe events seen at MiniBo...

Neutrino oscillations have been established in solar and atmospheric neutrinos, but a third signal from the LSND experiment is incompatible with three Standard Model neutrinos. The MiniBooNE experiment can confirm or refute the LSND oscillation signal with 1 × 10 21 protons on target. While working towards the oscillation result, MiniBooNE will accumulate more than 1 × 10 6 neutrino interaction...
